Matt Scutchfield is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, free thinker, improviser, music educator, artist, and activist. Matt has been around music as long as he can conscientiously remember, but has within the past few years realized how involved in the arts he really is. Planning to spend a lifetime working in various aspects in the music world, Matt is one of the most varied musicians for the job. Being proficient at a professional level on an ever-expanding list of stringed instruments, you will often see Matt play an array of instruments in just one show. Different instruments is just the first way in which Matt is diverse. His true diversity lies within the styles of music he plays. Richly steeped in the traditional music of the Appalachian mountains in styles such as folk and bluegrass, Matt has since went on to immerse himself in studies of evolved and complex music such as minimalism, avant-garde, and free improvisation. What he plays at shows varies, but recently it has been sets of old-time fiddle tune medleys with open interludes of improvisation.

Besides his technical prowess Matt is most respected among musicians for his incredible recollection of tunes and mammoth-sized repertoire. A classic jazz standard is called? No problem. An obscure fiddle tune from the Ozark Mts? Probably. Though if he doesn’t know it, give him one go around on it and he’ll have it forever. Matt’s inner-ear strength does not stop here though-he also has absolute perfect pitch and the ability to hear and discern microtones, enabling him to go beyond standard means of compositions.

Matt’s work already includes being a session musician on a number of projects, playing in various bands lead by others, leading his own groups, stepping out as a soloist and collaborator, and founding and running his own record label, Chromotone Records. (Home of his 2012 EP release)
